Melkbosstrand Police’s Mandela Day activities started with police officers conducting a licence inspection at Kreeftebaai in conjunction with the Melkbos Neighbourhood law enforcement officers from Big Bay. They also handed out pamphlets explaining the Batho Pele principles which explain that service delivery has to be transparent.

Thereafter it was time to head for the informal settlements on Varkplaas, 4x 4 and Melkbosch Farm, and hand out gifts.

At 1.30 pm the grounds of the police station became very busy. The Atlantic Beach Homeowners Association had sent over a team of gardeners to clean up and upgrade the grounds of the police station. This was Phase 1 of the work on the garden, explained Tarryn Nel, the Marketing & Communications Co-ordinator for the estate. Also on today’s agenda were painting the flower pots, moving a heavy stone bench to a spot near a door to make a visual statement and composting soil. The next phase will include planting the flower beds.

Upgrading the garden is part of the estate’s Mandela Day activities. “I want to thank you,” station commander Captain Ronita van der Toorn said. “Our gardener, whom we call ‘Ore’ is very sick with cancer and he might not make it to the end of the week.”
