Luvo Domi (31) dreams of providing a better life for his three-year-old son, Olwam (meaning ‘my one’).
“I’m going to push myself hard and work my way up,” he says. Luvo plans to study part-time with a five-year goal of being promoted to Area Manager.
Olwam lives with family in Luvo’s birthplace, King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape – but he gets a call from daddy every night to find out how his day went.
Luvo’s big smile is always on show at Main Gate where he has been working as a Security officer for almost six years. “I’ve always worked in Security,” he says “but I feel most at home here at Atlantic Beach Estate with the friendly residents”.
Luvo leaves home at 4.45am for the daily commute to work from Khayelitsha which means that there’s no time for football. “I used to play soccer – striker, in fact, as I’m very, very fast and quick on my feet!” laughs the lifetime Orlando Pirates supporter. “I used to score many goals. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to train now, but hopefully one day again… If I was still playing, I’d be the solution for Bafana Bafana”. Watch out Sibusiso Vilakazi!
His favourite food is umphokoqo with Amasi, a crumbly mielie-meal or krummelpap. Luvo shares his love of traditional food with Madiba, who once told his personal chef that, if he could choose anything to eat for the rest of his life, it would be Amasi.
